This Week in the Library: January 20-23
A short week at Sherwood, but busy in the library. If you are in a class that comes to the library on Monday, your books will be due next week (Jan. 26). You are always free to exchange books before school and at open recess times. Here's what we did in the library this week:
Primary Classes (W and F only): We heard "Lost Cat" by C. Roger Mader. This is one of our Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award nominees. We discussed the author's use of words to make the story more interesting for the reader. Vocabulary words: commotion, fled, skedaddled, hectic.
Intermediate Classes (W and F only): The Best Book Program was introduced to students. They learned about the two award lists that make up the "Best Books" (Sasquatch, Young Readers Choice-Jr. Division) and we heard about the first few books on the list. We will be hearing book talks about the remaining titles in the coming weeks! Links to the author websites and "teaser" videos are on our best book page.
Professional: Attended the district librarian meeting at Beverly Elementary Library, met w/ Sarah L from the district technology department to follow up on the coming wifi upgrade and options for Chromebook storage.

Sherwood Newspaper Page Created
The newspaper had it's first meetings today. This morning students learned whether they were in session one or two (we had so many students wanting to be journalists we had to divide into 2 groups). Groups were drawn at random.
Later, Session One met. We set up our journalist folders. We did a short activity about interviewing. Each journalist interviewed someone at their table. We had time for half of the journalists to introduce the person they interviewed.
We finally went over the assignment for the week. It's posted on the Newspaper Page (click the Sherwood Newspaper tab at the top of this page).

This Week in the Library: January 12-16
There were a lot of great discussions in the library this week. From basketball to world events to arguing opinions, the library was a place to share ideas. Here's what went on during classes:
Primary (K-3): We heard the book "Hoop Genius" by John Coy. This book tells the true story of how basketball was invented in 1891 and is on our Washington Children's Choice List. Students learn about the vocabulary words rowdy, lacrosse, foul, and halt. We thought about why this game was invented and how it became so popular. Links: Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame , Naismith Birthplace ,
4th Grade: Added thousandths to our number ordering practice. We reviewed the names of the other place values.
5th Grade: Continued our work on fact and opinion. Emphasis was placed on thinking about potential sources of information that could be used to prove or disprove a statement of fact. Students worked together in table groups to discuss a fact and an opinion.
6th Grade: We completed work on our personal timelines by adding a couple of world/US events. Student groups used infoplease.com to find an event that occurred during their lives or just before they were born. The events were added to their timelines.
Professional: Attended the staff meeting on Wednesday. Covered as a substitute in classrooms on Tuesday due to substitute unavailability. Checked in 45 Chromebooks (added battery, charged them, labeled them for classrooms). They will be going to 5th & 6th grade classrooms soon. Reviewed several books for Puget Sound Council. Began Reading "Yardsticks: Children in the Classroom Ages 4-14" by Chip Wood. Read student responses to Best Books submitted online.

This Week In the Library: January 5 - 9
Happy New Year!!!! Welcome to 2015. The library was busy this first week back from vacation. Here's what we did!
Primary Classes (K-3): Heard "The Snatchabook" by Helen Docherty. We reviewed (learned) the words: contentedly, disappeared, rumors, and amends. We talked about how the Snatchabook made amends and why he was taking books in the first place. This is another title on our Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award list for 2015.
4th Grade: Continued to practice number order using the Dewey Decimal System. This week we organized numbers to the hundredths place.
5th Grade: Began a short unit on determining fact and opinion. Students complete a short pre-assessment and we started talking about fact (they can be true or false, they can be proven) and opinions (they cannot be proven, they can be argued, they can be supported by facts).
6th Grade: Continued to work on our timelines. We added events that occurred before students were born onto their timelines. We will complete this project next week.
Professional: Attended Puget Sound Council for the Review of Children's Books. I was asked and agreed to participation in the district's Wireless Display Device Pilot Project. I prepared 3 computer carts to be traded with the district for new Chromebooks. I cataloged the remaining books earned from the book fair (final work on these books - laminating covers, adhering labels - will occur next week. I helped organize and get the Newspaper Club going and made contact with a newspaper photographer from the Everett Herald to help us with photography.
