This Week in the Library: October 5-9

It's October!  Check out the new books on display.  They were purchased with money from last year's book fair.  Here's what we did in classes this week:

Kindergarten (Morehouse): We heard "I Took My Frog To The Library" by Eric Kimmel.  To respond to the book, students created a page for our class book, "What We Took To The Library." Vocabulary words: dictionary, pouch, shoulder

Kindergarten (Widener): We heard "I Stink" by Kate McMullan.  We practiced getting and returning supplies in the library.

Kindergarten (Cook):  We heard "Chester's Way" by Kevin Henkes.   After discussing the book, we created shelf markers so we can begin checking out books next week.  A letter went home to parents.  LETTER TO PARENTS.  Vocabulary words: diagonal, disguises, nifty

1st Grade: We worked on understanding how to take care of library books.  We heard "Manners With a Library Book" by Amanda Tourville. Vocabulary words: dance, dancer, dancing, sneakers.

2nd Grade (Gregerson): Reviewed library expectations using an interactive PowerPoint presentation and practiced looking for books quietly.

2nd Grade (Goodsky, Rempel):  We heard "Manners in the Library" by Carrie Finn.  We discussed how to act in the library.

3rd Grade (Keating) :  We heard "Applesauce Season" by Eden Lipson.

3rd Grade (Liker, Pawling): We completed our book care bookmarks!  Students used book care tips they had brainstormed in a previous library lesson.

4th Grade (all classes): We continued our introduction of the Dewey Decimal System, which is used to organize the books in our classified section.

5th Grade (Alderson):  Groups used their brainstormed list of library rules to pick 1-3 ideas to use for a poster to be displayed in the library.  Groups began to create a rough sketch of their poster.

5th Grade (Wildenhaus): We brainstormed how the school rules "be kind, be safe, and be a learner" look in the library.  Groups will create posters next week to remind others.

6th Grade (all classes):  We worked on our library skills checklist.  Students had to demonstrate that they knew how to checkout/return/renew, place a hold on a book, create resource lists on their library account, and add books and web sites to these lists.  We will finish this work next week.

Professional: Read chapters 6-7 in "Mindsets in the Classroom" by Mary Cay Ricci.
Also, continued working on getting materials ready for circulation. Depending on the book this might involve: cataloging, creating and placing the spine label, laminating the cover, taping the spine, stamping the book with school identification, or placing other labels (award, language, etc).
Participated in the district's Tech Team Training on Tuesday with Mrs. Goodsky, Mr. Gibson, and Mr. Wildenhaus.  We began to work on a technology tools plan for Sherwood.
Attended the building staff meeting on Wednesday morning.
Worked on gathering data and information so we can ensure classrooms have the computers they need (1 to 1 in 5th & 6th grades, 2 to 1 in all other classes).
Attended my beginning of the year conference to set goals for this year's teacher evaluation.
